On Saturday 24 June 2006, Birmingham Guantanamo Campaign held a vigil on the A45 outside Birmingham International Airport to "demand action to put a stop to the CIA's torture flights". This was one of several vigils scheduled to take place at different airports on the same day, ahead of the forthcoming presentation on Tuesday 27th June of a report titled "alleged secret detentions and unlawful inter-state transfers of detainees involving Council of Europe member states" by Dick Marty to the so-called Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

interrogation, often to places where torture is practiced – and the US
administration doesn’t deny it. This is called extraordinary rendition”
A report by Council of Europe rapporteur Dick Marty says European governments including Britain are complicit in these abuses.
The
Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe will be debating the
report on 27th June. Join our vigils to demand action to put a stop to
the CIA’s torture flights. Peaceful vigils are planned around the UK
and Ireland.

The suicides of three detainees at the US base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, amount to acts of war, the US military says. The camp commander said the two Saudis and a Yemeni were
"committed" and had killed themselves in "an act of asymmetric warfare
waged against us".

The prison camps at Guantanamo Bay were gripped
by a series of uprisings and disturbances which suggest a state of near revolt,
it has emerged. Reports from within the controversial detention centre in Cuba
claim the base's military commanders believe there were links between a series
of suicide attempts, medical emergencies and the violent clashes between 20
inmates and guards on Thursday [18th May]. |

The US military has provided conflicting reports
of a clash that took place Thursday between guards and prisoners at the
Guantánamo Bay, Cuba internment camp. Initially, a spokesman reported that
inmates, wielding improvised weapons, had confronted guards when the latter
attempted to prevent another detainee from committing suicide. The suicide
attempt was said to be the fourth of the day. |
