Familiy members call for the closure of the Guantanamo detention.
The flags were raised and bearing slogans like “Close Guantanamo Prison” or “Freedom to al-Helah.” 1000 demonstrators, some from members from concerned NGO's and some from families of those held at Guantanamo Bay Prison, marched in front of the Yemeni Parliament and then to the United Nations building last Saturday. The demonstration was arranged by the HOOD organization (The National Organization for Defending Human Rights and Freedom). The head of the constitutional committee in the Parliament, Ali Buhaliqaqh took the letter listing the demonstrators' demands and said that parliament would discuss it in its coming session, according to Khalid al-Anesi, HOOD's executive director. Reports of International Protest day from across the world Sydney, Australia
In very wet and cold weather conditions, between 200 and 250 people turned up today, Saturday July 15th, to the International Day of protest outside Sydney Town Hall calling for the Closure of Guantanamo and the repatriation of Australian David Hicks
Many demonstrators were wearing atleast one piece of orange clothing. There were Orange balloons all around the Town Hall saying Bring Hicks Home. |

Starbucks has an outlet in Guantanamo Bay and say they “... refrain
from taking a position on the legality of the detention centre at
Guantanamo Bay”. The company also states: “Starbucks has the deepest
respect and admiration for U.S. military personnel." A demonstration
was held at two branches of Starbucks in Brighton on Sat 3 Jun to ask
the people of Brighton not to “refrain from taking a position” on
issues such as detention without trial, supporting illegal occupation
and the many war crimes perpetrated by the US, and to support our
brother Omar Deghayes. |

The US military has provided conflicting reports
of a clash that took place Thursday between guards and prisoners at the
Guantánamo Bay, Cuba internment camp. Initially, a spokesman reported that
inmates, wielding improvised weapons, had confronted guards when the latter
attempted to prevent another detainee from committing suicide. The suicide
attempt was said to be the fourth of the day. |

The prison camps at Guantanamo Bay were gripped
by a series of uprisings and disturbances which suggest a state of near revolt,
it has emerged. Reports from within the controversial detention centre in Cuba
claim the base's military commanders believe there were links between a series
of suicide attempts, medical emergencies and the violent clashes between 20
inmates and guards on Thursday [18th May]. |

Friday the 20th of May’s reports that at least four Guantanamo detainees had to be physically restrained from committing suicide is a very alarming development and an indication of the level of despair and desperation faced by all who continue to be illegally imprisoned in Guanatanamo Bay. It appears,from the scant reports we have received, that several other detainees were involved in a clash with the guards. Yet the British government refuses to act on behalf of British residents still detained at Guantanamo. |
