MP Delegation to Visit Guantánamo? Following a meeting with the US Embassy in London on 22 August, five MPs representing British residents currently being held at Guantánamo have written to the US ambassador to ask for a delegation of British MPs from all parties, representing parliament, to be allowed to visit the detention centre at Guantánamo Bay. The letter was signed by Des Turner (Lab: Brighton Kemptown), Sarah Teather (Lib Dem: Brent East), Edward Davey (Lib Dem: Kingston and Surbiton), Karen Buck (Lab: Regent's Park and Kensington North) and Jeremy Corbyn (Lab: Islington North).
Below is a press release from the office of Sarah Teather MP (Jamil El-Banna's MP):
US MUST ALLOW DELEGATION INTO GUANTANAMO – TEATHER Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East, Sarah Teather, has today written to the American Government demanding that a delegation of British MPs be allowed to visit Guantánamo Bay. Brent Resident Jamil El-Banna is currently being held in the detention centre without charge.
The letter, signed by five MPs including Sarah Teather, calls on the USA to demonstrate that conditions inside the detention centre are acceptable in terms of human rights and international conventions.
Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said:
“Every day that Jamil El-Banna spends in Guantánamo Bay causes more distress for his family and friends here in Brent. His detention without charge or trial is entirely against international law.
“I will continue to work with local campaigners until Jamil is brought home. Until then the United States has a duty to prove that conditions in the camp meet international standards. Guantanamo has for too long acted as a recruiting sergeant for extremists. The US must either release Jamil or present evidence against him in a court of law.
“I have already visited Washington to raise this case with the American Government, and am now asking to visit Guantánamo Bay to ensure the welfare of my constituent.
“The families of those in Guantanamo have had almost no contact with those held. They have had to survive on rumour and third hand accounts of their relatives’ well being. It would be a much needed gesture by the US to let representatives of the UK Parliament visit our constituents and be able to reassure their families that they are unharmed.”
Parliamentary debate about the British residents?
Ms Teather also tabled an Early Day Motion(EDM) in February 2006 about the British residents in Guantánamo. Provided that enough MPs sign it before Parliament reopens at the end of October, a debate about the residents can be held in Parliament; otherwise the EDM expires. If your MP has not signed the EDM (regardless of whether you live in London or not), please contact them by post, email or meet them at one of their surgeries and ask them to sign the EDM (no. 1694) and show their support for a debate about the British residents being held in Guantánamo.

JAMIL EL-BANNA AND BRITISH RESIDENTS IN GUANTANAMO BAY
27.02.2006 Teather, Sarah That this House applauds the Times Series Newspapers on their `Justice for Dad' campaign with its call to the British Government and US Administration to bring justice to Jamil el-Banna, a British resident held in Guantanamo Bay for over three years without charge or trial; regrets the Prime Minister's use of the word `anomaly' to describe the camp at Guantanamo Bay and suggests that he uses the term `international disgrace' in the future; and calls on the British Government to acknowledge its moral duty towards British residents held in Guantanamo Bay, particularly those such as Jamil el-Banna who have British children, and to make immediate representations to the US Administration calling for Jamil el-Banna and other British residents either to be given a fair trial or to be released without further delay.
